Catalogue Note

The Spanish title of the present work refers to La Maja Desnuda (The Nude 'Maja') – a provocative recumbent nude painted by Francisco de Goya at the end of the eighteenth century, now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Goya included these female members of Madrid's artistic and literary society in many of his compositions. As the present inscription indicates, Matta clearly made a link between Goya's femme fatale and the eponymous protagonist of the opera Carmen for which he produced this set design.
