Catalogue Note
A renowned collector of Greek and Russian icons -- amongst other works of art, including those by Rivera – the sitter in this painting is accompanied by another icon of Mexican history, the Nayarit clay figure, posed on the dresser behind him. In the photograph below can be seen this very same figure and dresser against the wall behind Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, perhaps an act on the part of the artist of bringing his own studio and country’s icon into the portrait he composed.
