Catalogue Note
The Jewish community at Veenendaal, near Utrecht, was at its peak in the mid 19th century. In 1852, the community built a new synagogue on the Verlaat, and the Jewish population numbered 101 persons in 1869. It declined leading up to the Second World War, when most of the remaining Jews were deported. The synagogue was vandalized and its ornaments destroyed. After the war, the community was disbanded and the synagogue sold and razed.
