The flowering vase is explained by Nitza Behoroozi BarOz in the exhibition catalogue, Shimmering Gold,  The Splendor of Gold Embroidered Textiles.  She writes that in diverse traditions, "certain forms of cypress, vines and palm trees often appear as visual metaphors for 'the tree of life'.  In Jewish tradition, the motif also represents the Torah: 'She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed' (Proverbs 3:18). In seeking to express an affinity with the latter image, the motif represented by a stylized palm or a central vase from which an entwined branch flows was often used on torah mantles" (p. 5)
