This wimpel was made for Simon the son of Judah, born on Wednesday, 27 Sivan, 5581 [= 27 June, 1821]

Catalogue Note

The text of the wimpel is penned in an ornamental square Ashkenazi script and the binder is filled with whimsical images of animal, bird and floral motifs. As is the custom, the artist included an image of the zodiacal sign under which the child was born; in this instance a lamb, representing the sign for the Hebrew month of Nisan. Binders such as this one would be stored in the synagogue. They served a valuable historic function, acting as an informal birth register of the community.
