A rare complete set of a luxury edition originally owned by a woman
This 1767 Pentateuch printed in Amsterdam includes a number of changes from and improvements on, the earlier edition of 1751. The latter was brought to press by Isaac Przemyslow of Prague, while the former version was published by Isaac's son, Hirsch. Both works were edited in accordance with Daniel Bomberg's renowned second rabbinic bible of 1524-5 which set the standards for exactitude and accuracy to which Hebrew bible editions would be held for centuries to come. The 1767 volumes featured new typefaces and was printed by Leib ben Moses Sussmans whose printing house is described on the title page as "the more praiseworthy press," to distinguish it from its rivals (the orphans of Solomon Proops) in the highly competitive world of the Hebrew printing trade in eighteenth century Amsterdam. While the biblical text remained unchanged, Hirsch provided new front and back matter included the collected grammatical notes of his father, entitled Divrei Emet. Finally, in addition to the improved typography and added contents, a new engraved title page by Aaron Santcroos graced each volume.
