In the eighteenth century the community of Spanish-Portuguese Jews in England reached its zenith, under the leadership of a highly respected rabbi, David Nieto, who served from 1701-1728.  Nieto was one of the most accomplished Jews of his time and was equally distinguished as philosopher, physician, poet, mathematician, astronomer, and theologian. It was Nieto who was the first to fix the time for the beginning of Sabbath eve for the latitude of England. His son, Isaac Nieto, succeeded him as rabbi, serving from 1732 to 1741 and again from 1744 to 1757.  Isaac's most important contribution however, was this translation of the prayer-book into Spanish, published in 1740. This Spanish-language Mahzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur also contains a Jewish calendar for the years 5501 (1740-1) to 5522 (1761-2) and a list of "The most notable things from the Creation of the World to the Year 5501."  This edition was the basis of subsequent translations into English by Isaac Pinto and David de Sola Pool.
