evoking the ghost of Oiwa, the paper lantern baring the open-mouthed face of the heroine, her long hair brushed back and her eyes inlaid, an inscription on the the ivory stained for effect, inscribed on the reverse Namu Amida btsu zokumyo Iwa-jo (save us, merciful Buddha, the woman commonly known as Oiwa), Mitsuhiro
