Catalogue Note

The frame, made from holly, was created specifically for this work by George Nakashima.

Over a 15-year period, George Nakashima and Ben Shahn enjoyed a friendship that resulted in several artistic collaborations.  Nakashima's early commercial iconography included the use of Shahn's "Hand Study" and Shahn later sold his prints at Nakashima's studio, where puchasers could select a custom holly or walnut frame to go with the print.  Although Shahn died in 1969, the friendship between the families endured, and in 1990 Jonathan Shahn sculpted the only bronze portrait of Nakashima.
