Catalogue Note

Mordechai Levanon was born in Transylvania and immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1921. After settling in Jerusalem in 1939 the topography of the country, and especially of Jerusalem and Safed and their surrounding hills, became dominant motifs of his works, which increasingly explored aspects of the Israeli landscape in joyful colors. This monumental work was created during the artist's most prolific years during which he worked in Safed, where he brought the magical landscape of the city to life on large canvasses with expressionistic symbolism.
