Catalogue Note

Mordechai Omer discusses the recurrent theme of the stool in Michael Gross's work : "It is possible that the stool first entered Michael Gross's pictures in the paintings of his studio, where it was a functional piece of furniture. The earliest stool appeared in paintings from the early '40s... In even later paintings of the same series, there appear cold backgrounds, such as a greenish-blue... and the structure of the stool becomes more refined, more differentiated against the background of the canvas's base, as it gradually receives the most refined color of all in Gross's palette - white." (Mordechai Omer, Michael Gross, 1993, page 47-48).
