Catalogue Note

Mr. Itiel Pann has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Gideon Ofrat discusses the theme of motherhood in Pann's works and notes: "Biblical mothers clasping their babies in boundless holy love are common in his paintings." Describing another version of the theme represented in the work offered here, he observes "... the infant in the arms of his adoring mother is red haired, a kind of diminutive messianic David, while Rachel emerges as a sublime archetype of motherhood." (Gideon Ofrat in  "The Symbolism of Abel Pann", Abel Pann 1883-1963, exhibition catalogue, Mayanot Gallery, Jerusalem, 1987).
