Catalogue Note

Ticho was born in Moravia and grew up in Vienna, where she studied painting. She immigrated to Israel in 1912 and settled in Jerusalem, where she concentrated on drawing; developing her technique to such a high degree that Jacques Lipchitz, amongst others, declared her to be one of the finest draftsmen of her generation. Her home in Jerusalem became a meeting place for artists and writers and is now open to the public, under the auspices of the Israel Museum. In this work, Ticho focuses on one of her most beloved subjects, a dense copse of trees on a Jerusalem hilltop.
