Catalogue Note
Elements and symbols associated with ancient Indic iconography frequently appear in Raza's paintings. The present work with a circle enclosed by intertwining serpents is clearly related to the ancient ideal of the serpent used as a device for traversing the kundalini or the female organ, regarded as a source of energy and fertility.
As the artist says, 'I am very much interested in the concept of the kundalini - that dormant energy which has to be awakened... It is fabulous. Our libido is linked to artistic energy and all other awareness. Sex energy is intricately linked up with artistic expression.' (Yashodhara Dalmia, The Making of Modern Indian Art: The Progressives, New Delhi, 2001, p. 164).
