Catalogue Note

Jogen Chowdhury's art draws its inspiration from the plethora of images, objects and people surrounding the artist in his everyday life. His fantastical and freely drawn figures with their distorted and impossibly bent contours are woven into shape with a spidery web of dense cross hatched lines, fleshed out with a hint of color added with dry pastels.

With corpulent bodies that bloat and sag, beady eyes, and slightly demented expressions, Jogen's figures appear clumsy and monstrous, as if some genetic code within them has gone mad. 'They are embodiments of the artist's choice of satire and grotesquerie over conventional norms of beauty.' (Amrita Jhaveri, A Guide to 101 Modern and Contemporary Indian Artists, Mumbai, 2005, p. 26).
