Jamini Roy (1887-1972)

Trained as an academic painter in the European style, Jamini Roy eschewed Western practice later in his career and embraced the indegenous folk traditions of his native Bengal. He followed the Kalighat idiom to its source - the pata and brata paintings of rural Bengal. Roy meshed the curvilinear foms of the Kalighat style with the spare geometry of Modernism, as seen in the present lot.

His later works, as seen in lots 3 and 4, bear figures with narrow contours and sharp pointed eyes. The surface of the paintings is embellished with decorative symbols, short wavy lines and floral motifs arranged on a flat planar ground saturated with bright colors.
