Sailoz Mookherjea (1907 - 1960)

The wild windswept landscapes of rural India were a recurring theme for Sailoz, the theme suited both his temperament and his handling of the medium.  'In his treatment of landscape he creates spaces organically by the movement of color rather than by any clearly indicated recession...Often the whole composition surges with rhythm now delicate and grave, now tumultuous and free.  His arrangements are usually asymmetric and daringly balanced.'  (Jaya Appaswamy, "Conversations with Artists: A Ramachandran" in Lalit Kala Contemporary 17, New Delhi, 1974).
