Catalogue Note
Between 1906 and 1907 Herbin fully embraced Fauvism. While he had focused on painting still lifes and flowers during the preceding years, it was during this period that he turned towards the landscape.
La Place Maubert à Paris is a dazzling mosaic of colour, painted at the height of Herbin's Fauve period. The vibrant colours and vigorous brushwork pose a sharp contrast to the relatively sober, restrained scenes of Paris that Herbin executed in the first few years of the century. The imposing church visible in the background is the cathedral of Notre Dame.
