The canvas is not lined. UNder UV light, there is no evidence of any retouching. This work is in excellent consition.

Catalogue Note

signed 'Man Ray' and dated '54' lower right, oil on canvas; signed and dated '1954' on a piece of wood affixed to the stretcher. Painted in Paris in 1954.

Ce portrait représente l'actrice américaine Ruby Dee. A l'époque de l'exécution de son portrait, en 1954, Ruby incarne la femme de Sidney Poitier dans le film Go, Man, Go!, une comédie légère narrant l'histoire d'une équipe de  basketball, les Harlem Globetrotters. Man Ray décèle sans doute, dans le titre du film, un hommage à sa propre carrière et identité artistique. C'est probablement pour lui témoigner sa reconnaissance que Man Ray peint ce portrait sensuel de la jeune femme.
