Catalogue Note

Kanoldt, together with a number of important European expressionists including Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, and Gabriele Münter, formed the Neue Künstlervereinigung in Munich in 1908.  They organized three avant-garde exhibitions between 1909 and 1911 before Kanoldt's departure from the group.  Kanoldt later joined the Münchener Neue Sezession, maintaining his connections with advanced art and artists of the period.  He also taught at the Breslau Kunstakademie and Berlin Kunstakademie.  His works were declared degenerate by the Nazi government and seized in 1937.
