Description

  • A Fine and Rare Gold Flared Rectangular Wristwatch1953 REF 1593J MVT 975307 CASE 677167
  • length 42mm.
• cal. 9-90 octagonal nickel lever movement, Gyromax balance, 18 jewels, micrometer regulator • two-tone silvered matte dial, applied gold Arabic and dagger numerals, subsidiary seconds • 18k gold rectangular case, flared lugs, engraved inscription to the snap back • case, dial and movement signed

Condition

The movement is running and appears clean and unscratched, however we recommend service soon. The dial appears original, however it is dirty and has some marks, particularly toward the outer edge, on the line from 9 across to 3 and between 5 and 6. The case is in nice condition with only light signs of polish. The width is 26mm. The hallmark between the bottom lugs is very crisp. The original brushed finish is still visible on the sides and the back. The engraving on the back reads 'I. Rosen' - however there is almost no surface wear otherwise and no marks to the inside of the case. The Extract says the incription reads 'D. Rosen' rather than 'I. Rosen'. This must be a mistake in the extract as there are no signs that the initial was ever a 'D'. The strap of this wristwatch is made from an endangered species; please refer to Important Notices for further information.

Catalogue Note

Patek Philippe launched this model, Ref. 1593, in 1944. It would go on to be one of the most recognizable watches the company produced. This model is sometimes called the 'hour-glass.'

The case of this watch was made by Markowski, one of the finest case makers in Geneva. In addition to the 'Hour-Glass,' Ref. 1593, they were also responsible for the case production of other unusually shaped watches, including the 'Eiffel Tower,' Ref. 2441 and the 'Banana,' Ref. 2442.
