Catalogue Note
This model, Ref. 6236, one of the major dato-compax series, is one of the most complicated examples that Rolex ever produced. It is commonly known as the 'Jean-Claude Killy,' after the French Olympic and World Cup skiing champion. Legend has it that the first example of this model was presented to Killy, who now sits on the board of Rolex, S.A.
This model followed shortly on the heels of a similar dato-compax model, Ref. 6036. The main difference between the two is the bezel on the later model was a separate third piece, while the earlier version had a two-piece case. The 6236 was produced in limited numbers from around 1958 until 1962.
The combination of triple calendar and chronograph is especially desirable in today's collector's market. The fact that this model was produced in smaller numbers than other Rolex references makes this series more valuable.
The dial on the present watch appears to be two-tone under certain light. The outer date ring features rather thin Arabic numerals, which gives the dial a cleaner and more open look. It is also interesting to note that the calendar is in English as is 'Antimagnetic,' a reflection of this watch originally being retailed in New York.
For an other example of this model with a similar dial, see Gobbi, I Cronografi Rolex: La Leggenda, pp. 408-409.
