Description

  • An unusual musical automatonCIRCA 1905 'Conjurer'
  • figure height 66cm., dome height 74cm.
• figure of a magician formally attired, now lacking hair, standing behind a table with a pointed cup in his right hand and wand in his left; when activated he raises the cup to reveal one of four objects: dice, apples, a jeweled brooch and a miniature watch; after lowering the cup back over the object he waves the wand while turning his head, thus revealing that the original object has been replaced by another of the four; the sequence is repeated for each item • the base fitted with a musical mechanism, all mounted on a velvet covered platform • with a key pierced with the initials L. B. and glass dome

Condition

The music is playing, but is sluggish and just works. It will require a full cleaning. The clothing is for the most part original, but fairly worn with areas to the sleeves in tatters, hair missing, spot where it was now shows residue of glue, the wand covering very worn and will need to be restored. The case is stamped GB, and the nape of the neck bears an N, presumably at one point reading N and then a number that has since faded.
