  • An exceptional gold and enamel open-faced centre seconds duplex watch with enamel scene by V Dupont made for the Chinese marketcirca 1820 No 7236
  • diameter 59mm.
gilt duplex movement signed and numbered, decorative engraved scroll work, interesting dummy compensated balance • gold cuvette with engraved decoration • white enamel dial, roman numerals, centre seconds, the bezels decorated with floral sprays in gold and enamel against a pink ground, the pendant and bow similarly decorated, the back with an enamel plaque signed V Dupont fecit

Condition

Lovely watch. Movement not running, appears to be complete and fully wound, will need a full overhaul. Three green panels to bezels with chipping. Panel to case back is currently detached and there is some small chipping to the base as can be seen in the catalogue photograph, also a small area of repair below the signature to the right edge.

William Ilbery (1780-1839) is well known as a fine maker of watches for the Chinese market, indeed, G.H. Baillie credited him with introducing the style of watch known as "la montre chinoise". Many of his watches had finely engraved movements and incorporated the duplex escapement, the cases of Ilbery's watches are frequently decorated with fine enamel scenes and embellished with pearls.

J.F. Dupont was born in Paris in 1775. A highly accomplished and celebrated painter of enamel and porcelain, Dupont's colours were especially distinctive; indeed, he was known to mix his own colours.
