Catalogue Note

Reference 5100 is historically significant in the development of Patek Philippe complication wristwatches. Incorporating dual main spring barrels, it is the first 10-day wristwatch ever made by the company. Only three vintage long duration wristwatches by Patek Philippe are known from the market (two with 8-day movements sold Sotheby's New York, 1987 & 1995). Inspired by the classic Patek Philippe reference 2554 from the year 1952, the reference 5100 is housed in a spectacular flared sided case which echoes the fluid lines of a manta ray. In fact, a manta ray was used in the reference's promotional material to emphasize its similarity. With a sapphire crystal case back, the chronometer rated movement is clearly visible from the back of the watch. The reverse of the watch is engraved 'Year 2000', a reference to its introduction as a commemorative piece to celebrate the beginning of the third millennium. Immediately popular with collectors and enthusiasts alike, the watch was voted best wristwatch by the Robb report in 2000. Produced in a very limited series, a total of 1500 pieces were made in yellow gold, 750 in pink gold, 450 in white gold and just 300 in platinum.
