Catalogue Note

The present lot is the actual watch featured on the cover of "Vintage Rolex Sports Models" by Martin Skeet & Nick Urul (Second Edition) and its case number is noted inside the book's cover; the watch is further shown on pages 13 and 53 of the same book. The Sea-Dweller was introduced as a tool for divers in 1967 to replace the Submariner 5513 which was found to be unable to withstand the greater depths of deep sea diving. As divers pushed the limits of technology and pursued greater depthsc Rolex developed the Sea-Dweller which was fitted with an ingenious one-way pressure relief value, thicker lens and strengthened case. The valve dispenses the helium which builds up inside the watch upon decompression, thereby preventing any serious damage occurring. This model, reference 1665, was approved for depth ratings of 610 meters (2000 feet).

Sporting models such as the Submariner and Seadweller tend, by their nature, to be heavily used. The present wristwatch is notable for the excellent preservation of both case and dial.
