Description
This famous photograph captures the two great sluggers together during their 1927-28 barnstorming tour. The "Bustin' Babes" and "Larrupin Lou's" tour was wildly successful and provided fans in cities without major league teams a rare opportunity to see the great Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in action. It has been widely circulated that Lou Gehrig earned more on these barnstorming trips than he made while playing for the Yankees. This photo was a promotional item distributed in conjunction with the tour. In the upper right corner above Gehrig's pre-printed facsimile signature is his authentic inscription: “To my little pal, Mackey. With Kind personal regards, Cordially Lou Gehrig.” Gehrig's elegant writing rates 8/10. Just below “Mackey’s” name is the name “Arthur” inscribed in another hand. This photo, along with the Ruth/Gehrig signed ball offered in the following lot, is one of two family treasures that were originally obtained by “Mackey” and gifted to our consignor’s father “Arthur” when he was a child suffering from tuberculosis. The photograph itself is in excellent condition with minor creasing to the bottom right corner. A poignant letter from the consignor accompanies this lot. Additional LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA.
