Description

  • length 10in. (25.4cm)
mounted with the arms of the City of London, surrounded by three other coats of arms, repeated on both sides, and inscribed, "Lord Mayor and Sheriff's Committee 1866 - William Dunsford White, Esq.", with japanned wood handle, in a fitted presentation case from Bulgari

Catalogue Note

The arms are those of the City of London, the Lord Mayor - Thomas Gabriel, and the two sheriffs, Alderman Sydney Hedley Waterlow (elected Lord Mayor 1872) and Francis Lycett. 

Two sheriffs for the City of London are elected annually on the 24th of June by the Liverymen in Common Hall, and take office on the 28th of September.  We are grateful to Amy Proctor, Senior Information Officer, London Metropolitan Archives for help in cataloguing this lot.
