Description

  • width 8.8cm, 3 1/2 in
maker's mark FOT, German, circa 1830

rectangular, the lid inset with an oval Geneva enamel plaque painted with Penelope recognising her husband Odysseus dressed as a beggar, the ground chased with flowers and leafy scrolls on a matted ground, the sides and base engine-turned within similar borders

Condition

Generally very good condition. The lid has been off; there are two lid pins lacking, and the gold panel lining the interior of the lid does not meet the mounts perfectly. There is an area of discolouration (approx. 2mm x 3mm) to the far left of the painted scene, which is visible in the catalogue photo. Otherwise very crisp and appealing. Please note: The flange is struck with French import marks for 1864-1893 and St Petersburg import marks for 1818-1864, and is numbered: 3309.
