Description
the first a three-colour gold snuff box, Melchior-René Barre, charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache, Paris, 1775, chased with trophées d'amour on wavy engine-turned grounds, width 6.5cm, 2 5/8 in; the second a two-colour gold snuff box, maker's mark rubbed, perhaps B&H incuse, Swiss, late 18th century, oval, the surface with engined-turned circle ornament on a finely reeded ground within husk borders, width 6cm, 2 3/8 in; the third circular, the lid centred with an enamel plaque painted en grisaille in imitation of cameo with a profile bust of Plato, seed pearl border, on a ground of glass over pressed blue foil, the sides and base of tortoiseshell with scrolly piqué diaper enclosing piqué mullets, diameter 6.3cm 2 1/2 in
Condition
First: Considerable wear overall and shallow dents to side. The interior could do with a cleaning.
Second: The box with minor surface scratches, some wear to chased decoration and a narrow separation at rear base rim, but gives an overall good impression.
Third: The piqué work, enamel and glass all in good condition. There are two age cracks to the side of the lid with traces of old restoration; one of these is visible in the catalogue photo. Base rim with dent.
