Description
- 9.5cm, 3 3/4 in diameter
each of circular bulbous form, applied with three mermaid supports between swags of fish in nets, scallop shell rim, gilt interior, engraved with a crest on underside, together with four Victorian silver spoons, Hunt & Roskell, London, 1865, each with mermaid finial, leaf stem, gilt flower-shaped bowl
Condition
The Kandler salts with clear hallmarks on underside, the Mathie example with evidence of an old repair around one foot. The mermaid supports with some wear to faces. The spoons generally good, one with a probably old repair to stem.

Catalogue Note
These salts are similar to an earlier model produced by Kandler in 1731 with mermaid supports and rocaille swags.A set of four of these sold Sotheby's, London, November 7th 1996, lot 189, and a set of four identical to the present example sold Sotheby's London, June 1st,2006, lot 101. The 1731 model represents some of the earliest manifestations of the rococo style in Britain.
