Description

  • 22cm, 8 5/8 in high
plain two-handled tub-shaped bodies applied with horizontal hoops and armorial engraved, the handles numbered 1 and 2

Condition

One with worn hallmarks, the other with maker's mark only visible, arms probably later, lacking liners and collars.

The arms are those of Baring, Barons Ashburton.

Although the design of these wine coolers is far more restrained than Paul Storr's later output, it is typical of his earlier work. These coolers were made just two years after Storr registered his first hallmark and set up as an independent silversmith. A similar pair bearing the arms of North, Earls of Guilford, was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 10th July 1990, lot 332.
