South German, circa 1875
shaped oval, on richly chased spreading oval silver foot, the bowl also of silver, chased with foliage and set with a carved ivory scene flanked by four columns depicting the meeting in 1378 between Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and 'Father of Bohemia,' and his nephew, Charles V of France, surrounded by a broad shaped border of ivory similarly carved with four vignettes, three with ancient battles scenes, the fourth with a regal procession, with five appropriate coats-of-arms and further embellished with the bust of a nobleman and trophies of war, the underside with decorative figured silk lining

Condition
Excellent condition, well-carved and impressive. No restoration is apparent. The only loss is a small narrow area at 1 o'clock, approx. 1cm in length, just above the ivory border of the silver bowl; this is just visible in the catalogue photo on page 118. Minor shrinkage to the four pillars emanating from the central oval; the detail image on pages 84 and 85 of the catalogue gives a clear view of this. Minor discolouration in some areas, as expected.

Catalogue Note
Charles V (1338-1380) was the son of John II of France and his wife, Bona, sister of Charles IV (1316-1378), Holy Roman Emperor and 'Father of Bohemia.' Nephew and uncle met in a solemn public ceremony at Paris in 1378 to celebrate this family connection and the event was recorded in Charles V's richly illuminated copy of Grandes Chroniques de France.
