PERSEUS AND ANDROMEDA: A LARGE CARVED IVORY GROUP

South German, third quarter of the 19th century



with three putti encircling clouds at the feet of Perseus, muscular, winged and bearded, grasping Andromeda, exulting in her freedom, about the waist, the domed circular silver-gilt base embossed and chased with bands of formal foliage on matted grounds

Excellent conditon, and nicely carved. There is a small, discreet restoration to Andromeda's left hand at the base of her pinky. Perseus' wings may have been re-glued. The only apparent losses are a small number of minor chips to the feathers of his wings. Darkened age cracks and spots of discolouration as expected; the catalogue illustration gives a good indication of these.
