Description

  • width 9.8cm, 3 7/8 in
maker's mark FJ incuse with sunray and crossed S marks, circa 1815, the rim numbered: 4945



rectangular with cut corners, the lid painted en plein in opaque and translucent enamels with a shepherd and an angler at rest near a mountain stream, flanked by swirling striped blue cornucopiae of fruit, incised sunray corners, the sides and base smartly striped to simulate chintz, with bands of incised herringbone and overlapping painted laurel, rose and periwinkle sprays

Condition

Small scrape on lid at 1 o'clock, which is visible in the catalogue photo, and a tiny scratch above mountain, also visible in catalogue photo; larger scrapes to enamel on sides including two down to the gold. The interior would benefit from a professional clean. PLEASE NOTE: The interior has a later inscription dated 1885.
