of sixteenth century German-style columbine cup form, the silver-gilt applied wood stand incorporating a classical plaque, inscribed: Joanni Duke Baroni Coleridge communium placitorum justiciario Summo Pater Filio Judex Judici Maximi et mutui amoris monumentum D.D Joannes Taylor Coleridge EQVES Avratus E. Secretis Reginae Conciliarus mense Decembris A.S. MDCCCLXXIII
John Duke Coleridge became Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and a Privy Councillor in December 1873.
The identity of the maker who uses the well-known mark of the B and anchor appears to be unplublished. It is therefore interesting to find a similar cup and cover cup by the Hanau manufacturers Nereseheimer, exhibited recently in Germany (Macht und Pracht: Europas Glanz im 19. Jahrhundert [exhib. cat.], Europäisches Zentrum für Kunst und Industriekultur, Saarland, 2006, p. 239.)
