Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Thomas Osbourne, 4th Duke of Leeds KG (1713-1789), who in 1740 married Mary, granddaughter of the 1st Duke of Marlborough.

The intitials are for the Baronies of Fauconberg and Conyers.

The 4th Duke was succeeded by his son, Francis Godolphin, 5th Duke of Leeds KG (1751-1799). In 1773, when he was Marquess of Carmarthen, Francis married Amelia, suo jure Baroness Conyers. She was the only daughter of Robert D'Arcy, 8th Baron Conyers and 4th Earl of Holderness, Lord of the Bedchamber to George II from 1741 to 1751 and Governor to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) from 1771 to 1776.

In the nineteenth century the Barony of Conyers passed to a nephew of the Duke of Leeds, and thence by descent. Since these plates are hallmarked 1773 it is likely they were a wedding gift to Lord Carmarthen and Lady Conyers.
