Condition

Overall in excellent condition. The surface of the sideboard with nimor surface scratches and rubbing to the finish. The unevenness of the surface to the top was intentional in the design. The patination of the figural doors is also slightly uneven, which was also inherent in the design. The patination extends from the background to the figures with irregularity. The green patination was applied last. The interior of the entire piece is green with bronze detailing. The far proper right and left compartments open to reveal a fixed shelf and small drawer. The central compartment with two adjustable shelves with the eight original shelf pins. The "Bathers" series is extremely rare and the overall construction and detailing to this piece makes it as one of the expressive pieces in their retail line.

Catalogue Note

Philip and his eldest son, Kelvin, developed a unique approach to bronze furniture design.  The LaVerne family came from a strong background of furniture designers, including Philip's brother, Erwine and his wife, Estelle, whose work is also featured in this catalogue (lot 94). The "Bathers" cabinet was originally designed to be accompanied with a mirror depicting waves, which complemented the swimming figures on the doors.  There is believed to have been only one or two examples of this design executed.
