Catalogue Note
Jan Joseph Horemans the Elder was born in Antwerp and was a student of the sculptor Michiel van der Voort I and Jan van Pee, before joining the Guild of Luke in 1706 - 07. Following the tradition of Flemish genre painters, he made a large number of small anecdotal pictures which were very much in demand in the first half of the 18th century.
These four idyllic compositions were inspired by Lancret's Four Seasons, which Horemans may have known through N. de Larmessin's engravings. Horemans added his own individual touch to the present compositions, as seen in Spring where the maypole in the background is the same as that in another Spring painted by Horemans and offered (again, as one of a set of four seasons) London, Christie's December 12, 1986, lot 69.
