Catalogue Note
The solitary figure in this landscape is dwarfed by the towering Mount Epemeo, a dormant volcano on the mountainous island of Ischia, approximately 17 miles off of the coast of Naples. Mount Epemeo last erupted in the 14th century, and now serves to heat the famed hot springs of this popular vacation spot. Denis would have been familiar with Ischia, often called the Emerald Island, as he was living in Naples as the appointed court painter to Joseph Bonaparte in 1806.
