Catalogue Note
One of the most prolific artists of the Venetian cinquecento, Palma Giovane bridges the tradition of Tintoretto with the innovations of the Baroque. The present work demonstrates the merger of these two tendencies. The twisted figures of the crucified men and the serpentine female figure in the left foreground are clearly derived from Tintoretto’s figural types, whereas the dramatically foreshortened soldiers in the center and right foreground, and the sharply receding diagonals created by the beams of the crucifix, anticipate the complex spatial organization of the Baroque era.
