Catalogue Note

Prieur remained faithful to the influence of his master Bertin and his plein air sketches are distinguished by their attention to perspective, while maintaining an important atmospheric quality of light.  In 1833, he was awarded the Prix de Rome and traveled to Italy to take his place at the French Academy in Rome.  While there he made numerous sketches and studies of the surrounding area.  Here he has chosen to paint the region of Subiaco, a town in the Provinces of Rome, about twenty-five miles from Tivoli along the river Aniene.  It is mainly renowned as a tourist and religious resort and is home to the sacred grotto Sacro Speco, in St. Benedict's Abbey, and for the Abbey of St. Scholastica.  It is also famous as the first city in Italy where books were printed, in the 15th century.
