Catalogue Note

In this architectural landscape Denis portrays the stables of Maecenas. Maecenas was a trusted confident and well-educated advisor to Octavian, who was to become the first Emperor of Rome, Caesar Augustus. Opinions were much divided in ancient times as to the personal character of Maecenas; but the testimony to his great administrative and diplomatic ability was unanimous.

The estate of Maecenas was located in Tivoli, described in ancient times as the classical Tibur. The city dates back to the 13th century BC, and was originally an independent ally of Rome. In 338 BC, however, the city was absorbed by the Roman Empire, and quickly became a popular spot for Roman citizens due to its plentiful water supply and beautiful countryside vistas. The charming city is still under Roman authority and, as in the 3rd century BC, holds its reputation as an idyllic retreat. Denis would have traveled here as a part of his 5-year sojourn in the Roman countryside as a part of his artistic training, and would have been attractive to the artist for its romantic draw.
