This beautifully abstract study of the sea and clouds off the island of Ischia is typical of Denis' oeuvre.  Following the practice remommended by one of the most important of plein air landscape painters, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, Denis dedicated much of his time to such studies.  In the present picture, one can imagine the artist quickly sketching this view before the impending storm struck.
