Born in Switzerland, Bühlmann began his artistic training under Jakob Heinrich Reutlinger, the Swiss theater and set designer. Between 1836-1871, Bühlmann travelled to Italy where he was drawn to the beauty of the southern landscape in and around Capri, Naples, and Sicily.
