Catalogue Note
Boguet was born in Chantilly, France, and was sent to Paris to study historical painting at the Académie in the late 1770s. As was popular with many other artists of the time, after his formal schooling he left France to complete his artistic training in the Roman countryside.
This interesting, unfinished oil study is a product of Boguet’s sojourn in Rome, and demonstrates well the artist’s technique. As many other late 18th century plein air painters often did, Boguet here sketched out his composition in pencil and then painted the scene from the top, down. This is more of a small painting than a study, and the beautifully observed light and delicate handling of the landscape are particularly refined.
