Catalogue Note
In the present painting Santacroce used the edge of the tomb as a repoussoir device to push the main action to the front of the picture plane. The artist used a similar technique, which reveals the influence of Giovanni Bellini, in whose workshop he was employed, in many of his paintings, such as his San Sebastiano, now in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin, inv. no. 195.
