Catalogue Note

The composition known as the "Madonna of the Cherries" was derived from a Leonardesque prototype.  Its popularity is attested to by the numerous versions by van Cleve and his studio.  Joos van Cleve, one of the most important artists active in Antwerp in the first four decades of the 16th century, was one of the leading exponents of the Italianizing style that was current in Flanders at that time.
