It has been suggested (in a communication from the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague) that this portrait may have originated in the circle of Barthel Bruyn the Elder (1493-1555).  It was in the celebrated Hamilton Palace sale in 1882 (see Provenance).
