Description

Designed as a pair of wings pavĂ©-set with old-mine and rose-cut diamonds, the center set with 2 pear-shaped diamonds, mounted in silver and gold, signed C& AG, brooch pin detachable, together with a hair comb fitting. Accompanied by fitted leather box stamped C. Giuliano, 115 Piccadilly, London.

Condition

Good condition with overall surface wear. The 2 pear-shaped diamonds at center bear chips along the girdle; one is eye-visible but not readily apparent. These and the old mine- and rose-cut diamonds are predominantly H-J color, SI clarity. The brooch fitting detaches and there is a separate hair comb included. The gilt-tooled red leather box shows signs of wear and areas of discoloration. There ivory silk lining is signed as described in the catalogue description. The fitted interior is covered with blue velvet.

Catalogue Note

A similar Giuliano brooch, designed as paired wings flanking a cabochon sapphire, based on an ancient Egyptian symbol referred to as a "winged globe", is illustrated by Charlotte Gere and Geoffrey Munn, Artists' Jewellery, Pre-Raphaelite to Arts and Crafts, p. 147, pl. 100.  According to the original invoice from Giuliano that accompanied the jewel, which was a gift from the original purchaser to his daughter, its form is emblematic of the month of April.
